Jazz clarinetist Lynn Zimmer was born in Kansas City, Kansas, and grew up at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. It was there as a child, being exposed to record albums of Dixieland jazz music from the Swing Era, that his interest in music began. He started his professional career in 1975 in Osage Beach, Missouri, at the age of nineteen. In 1978, Lynn auditioned for and toured with Clyde McCoy, the great Swing Era bandleader who made popular the million-selling “Sugar Blues”. Soon thereafter, Lynn moved to Kansas City and played with local traditional jazz groups – most notably the New Red Onion Jazz Babies – and also led his own six-piece, New Orleans-style band. After three years, Lynn joined Turk Murphy’s Jazz Band in San Francisco, and for the next seven years made his home in the bay area playing for Turk – a West Coast jazz institution – in his nightclub “Earthquake McGoon’s” and later playing with Turk at the Fairmont Hotel. After his four-year stint with Turk, he spent the remaining time leading his own band.
In 1990, Lynn moved to New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, and was hired by the internationally-known, Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Al Hirt. For the next year and a half, Lynn went on concert tours with Mr. Hirt, as well as playing in his nightclub on Bourbon Street.
Lynn moved back to the Lake of the Ozarks and performed at Dick Hawk’s Country Club Hotel & Spa with his quartet, four nights a week, for twelve years. It was there that he began his friendship with legendary Nashville recording artist and performer, the “Yakety Sax Man”, Boots Randolph. Many live performances together and a CD recording came about as a result of this association.
Now living in Kansas City, he performs year-round at the Gaslight Grill. Lynn and his group play Wednesdays through Sundays, for dinner, cocktails and dancing – playing New Orleans Dixieland Jazz and popular favorites from the Thirties and Forties.
